Africa Must Be With Africa

All African countries may not be like us,
but all African countries must be with us.
For what is a drum without the hands that beat it?
What is a river without the streams that feed it?

I understand we are a constellation of nations
each shining with its own fire,
but what is peace if not shared?
What is freedom if it isolates?

These borders are but scars from a history that tried to divide what the sun never separated.
We are different tongues of the same song,
We walk different paths, but we alone leave footprints on fire.

We are the rhythm that beats from the Kilimanjaro,
The fire of Shaka, the wisdom of Nkrumah,
the grit of Mandela, the roar of Sankara the dream of Lumumba.

But above all, we are the people;

the people too rich to be poor,
too strong to be broken,
too whole to be divided.

So let no anthem be louder than the drum of our oneness.

Africa must unite!

Do you not see it?

How the same winds that whisper through Ethiopia's highlands
sway the cocoa trees in Ghana's fields.
That the soil that cradles the pyramids of Egypt
smells like the red earth beneath Congo,
And how Namibia's salt seasons Nigeria's sweat.
Tell me, which part of Africa is not in another?

Yet we queue for visas to lands that merely entertain us,
and turn our backs on the lands that celebrates us.

Africa does not need saving-Africa needs itself.
Africa must be with Africa.
